Philip Wood built his own kiln in Nunney to produce a comprehensive range of eminently usable saltglaze pots to his own distinctive design before moving 1½ miles to his present premises in Whatley.
Almost every aspect of functional domesticware is catered for, from teaspoons to butter dishes, casseroles to cutlery holders, storage jars to spoons etc. All the culmination of good craftsmanship, knowledge of materials and processes. Of particular interest are the sensitively modelled sprigs - foxes with tales in the air, large strong cows and small delicate insects and the use of the wire-cut on bases and lid forms.
These illustrations unfortunately can't do justice to the overall light pink-tan colour of this relief pottery derived from the clay, the soft terra sigilata and the cloudy white slip and the creamy glaze.
All these items and many more are on sale at the potter’s premises in Whatley.
